מַצֵּבָה

מַצֵּבָהf. (b. h.; יָצַב) pillar, statue, monument. Sifra Kdosh. introd. (idols are named) מ׳ מפני שהם עומדים matsebah, because they are made to stand. Sifré Deut. 146 (ref. to Deut. 16:22) ומה מ׳ שאהובהוכ׳ if the erection of a pillar which was loved (of the Lord) in the fathers, is hateful in the descendants Y.Ab. Zar.
